Bajirao Mastaani is sheer musical bliss

Sanjay Leela Bhansali began his career as a director in 1996 with Khamoshi – The Musical, the film became a modern day classic and the music was well received.

bajirao mastaani

With Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam SLB proved that he had a good ear for music and thus created some lilting tunes with music director Ismail Darbar.

However Bhansali is known for his bad temper and tantrums. And therefore after the magical Devdas, both him and Ismail Darbar parted ways.

In 2010 Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to turn to music direction with Guzaarish and thus began his career as music director.

Do you know that SLB is a self confessed Lata Mangeshkar fan? and has stated on record that he learns by listening to Lataji’s songs for almost three to four hours a day, he also dedicates this album to the Melody Queen.

Bajirao Mastani is SLB’s most ambitious dream project that he has been planning for over a decade.

The story revolves around a Maratha King Bajirao and his love for Mastaani , his second wife.

The album opens with Deewani Mastaani, the song starts of with Marathi Folk tune and Shreya Ghosal takes over and gives the song its romantic flavor. The visuals of the song picturised on Deepika Padukone have been praised for its grandeur. We cant wait to see this song come alive on the big screen.

Aayat has to be the surprise Arjit Singh song of the year, while many of us love him for his numerous love songs, that almost sound the same. Here is a song that comes like a breath of fresh air. Arjit is superbly talented singer and SLB creates the perfect opportunity for him to show of his talent. The song is slow but is a classy track that will win many hearts in weeks to come.

Malhari is a song of victory sung by Vishal Dadlani, this has to be the worst song of the album and almost seems like a misfit, who know perhaps after watching the movie we might change our mind!

Mohe Rang Do Laal is a classical song by Pandit Birju Maharaj , who does the Kathak portion and Shreya Ghosal adds her soulful singing thus making this a classic composition. According to inside information Deepika Padukone will be performing some Kathak moves in this song, we waiting with bated breath to watch her dance moves in this song.

Albela Sajan is a 1970 Ustad Khan song which Bhansali used in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He reprises the song for the second time and the results are amazing, the song will mesmerize you from the beginning to end, Sashi Suman, Kunal Pandit and Prithivi Gandharva give of their best vocal rendition in this song.

Aab Tohe Jaane Na Doongi a song of love, Payal Dev & Shreyas Puranik croon about not willing to let go of their beloved, the song takes you on a journey of love between the two wives & Bajirao. A song that will be enjoyed more once you watch the on screen picturization.

Pinga has to be the most controversial song on the album as the song has upset a few people in the Marathi community, around the costumes ,dancing and interpretation of characters, it was stated that Kasabai (Priyanka Chopra’d character) could not have danced as she suffered from arthritis and Mastaani (Deepika Padukone’s character) was not a courtesan. Nevertheless the song sung by Shreya Ghosal & Vaishali Mhade is catchy and will sure be a chartbuster in weeks to come. We can assure you that fans are in for a treat when Priyanka Chopra & Deepika Padukone dance to this song on screen.

Ab Ibadat starts of with the religious shoklas and Javed Bashir singing is the main highlight as he easily wins over your heart with this lilting tune, he is supported by the Faridi Brothers. The Semi classical sound on this song is superb!

Fitoori adds the punch to the album as the song has the right beats and is sung with great energy by Vaishali Mhade. Wonder which heroine will be dancing to this tune?

Gajana is a Ganpati bhajan that has the vocals of Sukhvinder Singh, and we are sure it will be a delight to watch the picturization on the big screen.

On the whole Bajirao Mastaani has to be the best album of 2015, the album works as it has a variety of songs from the romantic, to the religious and celebratory songs, a rare combination for a Bollywood soundtrack these days!

Sanjay Leela Bhansali take a bow you have given your best soundtrack as a music director, we are sure that you will not disappoint us with the movie as well!

We rate the album a 9 out of 10 for its sheer musical brilliance.

Album now available on iTunes.
