Best Actor Aamir Khan

Post Lagaan , Aamir has chosen his films carefully and has thus earned the Mr “Perfectionist” title.

Films such as Fanaa,Rang De Bastani, Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 & PK have highlighted his brilliance as an actor. He played varied roles & broke many Box Office records over the years.

Dangal is his most refined performance to date, he plays the role with such conviction. To make the character authentic, Aamir Khan totally transformed his body & weighed 96 kg with body fat of 40%!

Aamir Khan is a genius and one of Bollywood’s most respected actors, we salute his talent.

He will soon start work on Thugs of Hindostan a film in which he is paired opposite Amitabh Bachchan, this is the first time he will be in a film opposite Amitabh Bachchan, and expectations are sky high.

Aamir will also do a special cameo in Secret Superstar.

Other actors who have stood out this year, in no particular order.

A special mention also goes out to the young and talented Sushant Singh Rajput, for his believable act in MS Dhoni, the actor has single handedly managed to carry the film on his shoulder and the film has managed a good run at the box office.

Amitabh Bachchan is one actor who has always managed to reinvent himself, in a career spanning over four decades.

In Pink he once again raised the bar, and made the audience notice his acting prowess, hats of to the legendary actor for always managing to keep up with the times.

Manoj Bajpai who acted in several films, decided to take on a daring role in Algirah, he plays the role of a professor who looses his job at a University because of his sexual preferences.

The film has won many accolades and was described in the Mid Day as follows “Aligarh is masterfully directed: it is that rare film that courageously stands for human rights, including those of homosexuals, yet offers a quiet, distilled perspective.”

In terms of the box office Akshay Kumar scored a hat trick, Airlift was one of his most loved films as we got to see a totally transformed actor, caught in a middle of a evacuation crisis in Kuwait, his second film Housefull 3 was a nonsensical comedy that managed to draw in the audience.

Akshay Kumar ended the year with the very successful Rustom, another performance orientated film based on a true story on the real life incident of Naval Officer K. M. Nanavati and businessman Prem Ahuja.

Salman Khan is the Sultan of the box office, and Sultan managed a whopping 300 crore at the box office. Need we say more?

Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan failed to make a noise at the box office. However he redeemed himself with Gauri Sindhe’s Dear Zindagi in cameo that was one of the films main highlights and his dialogues will be remembered for years to come.

Best Actress – Sonam Kapoor (Neerja)

Sonam Kapoor, is known more as a fashionista rather than a Actress!

However Neerja was the turning point in her career, and she proved that with the right role she can shine. She portrays the role with such great conviction that you end up feeling her turmoil.

Sadly the actress has no films in hand despite Neerja been a surprise hit at the box office.

Alia Bhatt, started the year with Kapoor & Sons, although her role in the film was pretty standard and nothing to shout about!

Alia’s second film Udta Punjab is one of her best performance, she plays the role of Bihari hockey champion who gives up her dream career to work in the fields Punjab, to support her family & gets caught up in a drug scandal.

Dear Zindagi is a dream role for Alia Bhatt as she impresses with a mature performance. In the film Alia plays the role of a young girl who is in search of her soul mate, she dates various guys that break her heart, she than seeks the help of a psychiatrist who changes her perception on life, she thus ends up discovering herself in the process.

Alia Bhatt will be seen in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya, a sequel to the 2014 film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, opposite Varun Dhawan.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt will also seen for the first time on the big screen in Ayan Mukherjee’s Dragon, a superhero film.

Anuska Sharma had two hits this year, Sultan was her first film opposite Salman Khan. And she manages to give an award worthy performance as Aarfa.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with Ranbir Kapoor, is another feather in her cap, as she worked for the first time with Karan Johar. The film centers around the friendship between Ayan and Alizeh, played by Anushka.

Anushka gets another opportunity to impress in a performance orientated role.

In 2017 Anushka will be seen in her second home production after NH10, the film entitled Phillauri is a romantic comedy.

SRK and Anushka will reunite for the third time in Imtiaz Ali’s The Ring (Working title).

Best Film – Dangal & Pink

Dangal is a masterpiece a sports biographical, that also highlights many societal prejudices, about women.

The film is about human triumph against all odds.

Aamir Khan, Fatima Sama Sheik, Sakshi Tanwar & Sanya Malhotra’s performances make this an entertaining and enlightening film. A rare combination in Bollywood these days!

Pink stands out for its relevance as the film yet again highlights the plight of women in society.

The film about three young girls who are targeted by few man while enjoying a night out.

Pink is the kind of film that Bollywood has to make more often.

Best supporting Act in a film – Shah Rukh Khan Dear Zindagi

While the film Dear Zindagi belonged to Alia Bhatt, SRK supported her well in the film and his role as a physiatrist is praise worthy.

He stands out for his charm, acting & great dialogue delivery.

This is one role that will be remembered for years to come, as it was well written and executed.

Shah Rukh Khan fans will see him in a few weeks from now in one of his most anticipated films Raees. He will also be seen in Imtiaz Ali’s The Ring (working title) a romantic drama.

Best Music – Pritam

The year 2016 undoubtedly belonged to Pritam, as his Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is an overall winner.

The soundtrack features atleast to 4 to 5 chart busting songs, a rare feature in Bollywood these days!

Although his other work this year included Dishoom & a song in Azhar & Dangal the music works well in the context of the film and Naina is worth a mention.

In 2017 Pritam is expected to rock the airwaves as he is working on films such as Jagga Jasoos, Raabta, Tubelight, Imtiaz Ali’s next, Golmal Again & Dragon.

Best Singer (Male) – Arijit Singh

Arijit Singh is a hit machine, and every song of his has something outstanding.

However Chana Merya from ADHM is top notch as the song has all the right emotions, Arjit Singh’s rendition makes this a modern day classic.

Best Singer (Female) Palak Muchhal

Palak has sung in a few films such as Sanam Teri Kasam, Ki & Ka, Raaz Reboot, Rustom, however it is her song Kaun Tujhe that strikes the right chords, she displays the suppleness and if you thought that Shreya Ghosal sang this song, we will not blame you!

Best Song – Tere Sang Yaraa

The romantic song from Rustom sung by Atif Aslam stands out for its simplicity and singing.

Music composed by Akro Pravo Mukherjee is a sure winner.

A special mention also must go to Channa Merya from ADHM, another blockbuster song by Arjit Singh with music by Pritam.

Life time achivement award for contribution to Bollywood

Lata Mangeshkar at 87 years of age, she remains Bollywood’s undisputed Melody Queen. In an age where singers raise their voices to be heard, she sings and the world stops to listen to her magical voice.

She began her signing career at the young age of 13. Many years later she had her first big song Aayega Aanewala from Mahal in 1949.

Lataji has sung for seven generation of actresses from Madubala to Kareena Kapoor.

Although Lataji has not sung in films for a few years, her work remains a text book on playback singing.
