Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Fawad Khan, Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt
Director: Shakun Batra
Kapoor & Sons produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma production, has created high expectations since the film and its star cast was announced.
Does the film live up to the hype created? Lets find out…
The film tells a story of Rahul (Fawad Khan) and Arjun Kapoor (Sidharth Malhotra)who are brothers living entirely different lives in London & New Jersey.
Rahul has established himself as a successful writer, Arjun is still struggling to find his true calling. In Coonoor (India) their family has three members: Daddu (Rishi Kapoor), father Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and mother Sunita (Ratna Pathak Shah). One day the brothers are asked to come home as their 90-year-old grandfather’s health has deteriorated. On arrival they find out that He has one wish and that is to get a family photo before he passes on.
Tia(Alia Bhatt) is friends with Arjun as they coincidently meet at a party. At the same time Tia has put her house for sale and Rahul shows an interest in buying the house, she finds him very attractive but ends up dating his brother Arjun.
The Kapoor family is a dysfunctional family continuously arguing and screaming at each other. Furthermore the family members have many hidden secrets.
Will the secrets (once revealed) ruin the already fragile relationships? Will Daddu’s dream of taking a family photo be possible?
The music of Kapoor& Sons has been topping the charts with party songs such as Kar Gayi Chul, Buddhu Sa Mann & Bolna. Although the songs are not unique they fit well with the story. A special mention to Amaal Malik for creating the chartbuster Kar Gayi Chul.
In terms of performances Fawad Khan as Rahul is outstanding, he is the perfect son every family prays for, focused, kind hearted and sensible. Fawad plays the role with great ease, watch him in the scene when he tries to keep his Mom calm after his father’s work colleague comes to Daddu’s 90th birthday party.
Sidharth Malhotra has taken giant strides with his performance in Kapoor & Sons. He has arrived and you cant help but notice the polished performance as the son who always feels neglected and unloved. This leads to rebellion. After Ek Villain this has to be his best.
Alia Bhatt looks like a dream. Her role does not offer her much scope to perform and it is a typical Bollywood heroine role, look beautiful, sing a couple of songs and fall in love.
In terms of supporting cast Rishi Kapoor is lovable as Daddu, he also adds some humor to a rather heavy film. Watch him in the scene where he uses his ipad to watch Madakini in Ram Teri Ganga Mali.
Rajat Kapoor & Ratna Pathak Shah are amazing as the parents of Rahul & Arjun. The couple have over the years drifted apart and are bitter towards each other. Watch them have an argument while the plumber is busy fixing a leaking pipe.
Director Shakun Batra made his directorial debut with Ek Main Aur Ek Tu in 2012. He returns with Kapoor & Sons, which is a well made film at all levels, he manages to add a few surprises to otherwise ordinary story. I like the fact that he does not become overly dramatic while adding the various twist to the story.
On the whole Kapoor & Sons is the perfect family film, it has all the ingredients of modern day families, the issues they are faced with. In the end all families do come together despite all the differences they have.
We at CineTalkies highly recommend Kapoor & Sons. The only draw back has to be the slow pace at which the film moves( some portions) and a rather grey background throughout the film, which I guess is used to enhance the story, but it can have a depressing effect.
We rate the film 8 out of 10 and recommend that you catch at soon as possible at a cinema near you.
We have watched and reviewed the movie with the compliments of CineCentre cinemas.
